Odor diagnosis

Odor diagnosis

Objectives

To characterize the odor sources:

This diagnosis is usually implemented to:

    Procedure
  • Meet regulatory requirements
  • Rank odor souces
  • To get site-specific data
    • to make an impact assessment
    • to define the layout diagram of the RQ Box electronic noses
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of odor treatment facilities

Procedure

  • On-site sampling campaign, by specialized technicians

Air samples are collected at the various emission sources. The sampling method implemented is appropriate to the type of source: channeled, surface, volume.

  • Analysis of the samples in the laboratory, using a sensory method: dynamic olfactometry.

A trained and qualified sensory panel determines the odor concentration of each sample using a dynamic olfactometer.

  • Odor flow rate calculation for each source

They are calculated from the odor concentrations provided by the olfactometric analysis. These flow rates enable the ranking and identification of the most emissive sources, based on normalized results.

The methods used for these studies are based on standard procedures:

  • NF EN 13725 : Air Quality – Determination of odour concentration by dynamic olfactometry
  • ASTM E679 – 04 : Standard Practice for Determination of Odor and Taste Thresholds by a Forced-Choice Ascending Concentration Series Method of Limits

Results

The results report contains :

  • The odor concentration measured for each sample
  • The odor flow rate calculated for each source
